Disston Economic Report "At a Glance"

Embedded is my report on the current economic situation in our study area:

DISSTON AT A GLANCE:

The greater Disston neighborhood contains 30,881 people. The overall population is 93.7% White, 3.1% Black, and 2.7% Hispanic. The median age is 36 years, and 15.6% of residents are older than 65. Family households compose 70% of total residents in neighborhood. The remaining 30% compose non-family housing.

The educational attainment of the neighborhood consists of 73.8% with at least a High School Diploma, and 8.7% with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Employment in the neighborhood consists of 58.9% of residents actively involved in the labor force. The unemployment rate rested at 5.6% in the year 2000.

To get to work 74% of residents use a car, 12% use a bus, 4.7% use the subway, and only 1% uses the SEPTA regional rail. The mean travel time to work is 30 minutes, and 23.2% of residents work outside of the city and county of Philadelphia. The neighborhood has an inflation adjusted median income of $41,264.

There are 13,135 units of housing in the neighborhood. Owner-occupied units compose more than 77% of total housing stock. Renter-occupied units compose the remaining 23% of units. 93.1% of housing units are occupied, leaving a vacancy rate of 6.9%. Attached single houses (rowhouses and twin houses) comprise 87.8% of housing in the neighborhood, and detached houses comprise 8.9% of housing. The median house size is 6.1 rooms. 90% of homes are heated by utility gas, and 7.5% are heated by fuel oil. 7.31% of properties had outstanding licenses and inspections violations compared with 19% citywide in 2004. The median residential sales price in the neighborhood in 2007 was $118,000 compared with $95,000 citywide.
